What is Nataraj Meditation anyway?

Nataraj meditation? Is it as weird and wonderful as it sounds?

Nataraja comes from ancient Sanskrit and means  “the lord of dance” and is a depiction of the Hindu god Shiva as the cosmic ecstatic dancer.

The contemporary form of Nataraj Meditation, which we will practice on the Uplift – Special One Day Event, is all about the energy of dance. This practice uses dance as a meditation, where all inner separation may dissolve leaving a subtle, relaxed awareness in its place.

Having participated in many of these meditations in my life, I have to say that it is a very special experience and not one that  you can find out there easily without going to India!

Osho, who was one of the teachers who brought this meditation to the West last century said, “Forget the dancer, the centre of the ego; become the dance. That is the meditation. Dance so deeply that you forget completely that ‘you’ are dancing and begin to feel that you are the dance. The division must disappear; then it becomes a meditation.

“If the division is there, then it is an exercise: good, healthy, but it cannot be said to be spiritual. It is just a simple dance. Dance is good in itself – as far as it goes it is good. After it, you will feel fresh, young. But it is not meditation yet. The dancer must go, until only the dance remains…. Don’t stand aside, don’t be an observer. Participate!

If you are worried that this is some hippy, interpretive dance scenario, then rest assured. It is just a movement meditation. It is aimed at offering you an inner experience where your eyes will be, for the most part, closed. You can choose to move with the music in any way that works for you. It is not about comparing dance styles or feeling embarassed. It is an internal process. It is not about being on a ‘dance floor’ like in a disco or at a party. It is about an experience of yourself as you move to the music.

You will either enjoy the exercise and gain the benefits of movement or you may experience the deeper meditative state that sometimes happens. Even though you do not interact with others, dancing in a group also adds to the experience and energy.

Here’s how it works in practice:

The meditation has three stages, lasting a total of 65 minutes.

First Stage: 40 minutes

With eyes closed, dance or move in any way that feels good to you to as you allow yourself to be swept up in the beautiful music. Let your unconscious take over completely. Do not try control your movements or witness what is happening. Just be totally in the dance. Slow down or speed up at will. Just keep moving even if you slow down.

Second Stage: 20 minutes

The music stops. Keeping your eyes closed, lie down immediately. You may cover yourself with a small blanket to prevent getting cold. Be silent and still.

Third Stage: 5 minutes

As the music commences again, dance in celebration and enjoy.

The benefits are physical and mental as you move the body and clear your lymph system with movement which may be accompanied by a sense of uplift and expansiveness mentally from flooding your body with all the happy chemicals produced when you move and feel pleasure.
